**To turn notes into a workbook, group the notes into modules, add one exercise after each lesson, and give the reader space to write.** Then lay it out with a cover, a table of contents and page numbers, and export a PDF. With BuildPDFs, you paste your notes, ask for a workbook, and the AI does the structure and the layout.

A [workbook](/glossary#workbook) is different from notes because the reader does something on each page. The steps below make that change.

## Step by step

### 1. Collect and clean the notes

Put all your notes in one document: slides, lesson outlines, coaching notes, workshop handouts. Remove repeats. You do not need full sentences yet.

### 2. Group the notes into modules

Make 3 to 8 modules. Each module answers one question or teaches one skill. Give each module a short, clear title. These titles become the table of contents.

### 3. Add an exercise to each lesson

After each lesson, add one thing the reader does:

- A reflection prompt: "Where do you lose the most time each week?"
- A fill-in exercise or a short quiz.
- A checklist or an action plan with dates.
- A self-assessment scale from 1 to 5.

### 4. Give space to write

Leave lined space, boxes or tables under each exercise. If people will print the workbook, give more space than you think they need.

### 5. Add the parts that help readers find their way

A cover, a short "how to use this workbook" page, a [table of contents](/glossary#table-of-contents), page numbers and a summary page at the end.

### 6. Lay it out and export

Use the same fonts and spacing on every page. Export a PDF at US Letter or A4, so people can print it at home.

## How to do it with AI

1. Open the [AI course workbook generator](/ai-course-workbook-generator).
2. Paste your notes and add one line: "Turn these notes into a 20-page course workbook for [audience], with an exercise and writing space after each lesson."
3. Review the modules. Ask for changes: "Split module 2 in two." "Add a self-assessment at the start."
4. Export the PDF. Exporting does not use credits, so you can export again after each change.

You can also start from the [course workbook template](/templates/course-workbook) or the [workshop workbook template](/templates/workshop-workbook).

## FAQ

### How long should a workbook be?

Long enough to cover one exercise per lesson. Most course workbooks are 15 to 40 pages. A workshop workbook for one day is often 10 to 20 pages.

### What is the difference between a workbook and a handout?

A handout gives information. A workbook asks the reader to act on it. See [workbook vs handout vs slide deck](/guides/workbook-vs-handout-vs-slide-deck).

### How do I make students actually use the workbook?

Put the exercises inside the lessons, not at the end, and refer to the workbook pages during the course. See [how to create a course workbook students actually use](/guides/course-workbook-students-use) and [what to include in a course workbook](/guides/course-workbook-template).
