Obituary

Eleanor Ruth Harmon, 83, of Westfield, New Jersey passed away peacefully at home on January 18, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born April 3, 1941, in Burlington, Vermont to Harold and Agnes (Whitfield) Porter, Eleanor spent her life as a devoted educator, avid gardener, and tireless community volunteer.

Eleanor dedicated 32 years to teaching elementary school in Westfield, where she shaped the lives of hundreds of students. Her classroom was known as a place of warmth, curiosity, and laughter — qualities that defined everything she touched. She received the Westfield Educator of the Year award in 1998 and retired in 2003, though she remained a beloved presence at the school for many years after.

She met the love of her life, Robert Harmon, at a contra dance in 1965 and they were married for 56 years until his passing in 2021\. Together they built a home full of music, gardening, good books, and the lively gatherings she so loved to host.

Eleanor is survived by her three children: David Harmon (Susan) of Princeton, Patricia Harmon-Lee (Michael) of Westfield, and Thomas Harmon of Austin, Texas; her six grandchildren: James, Claire, Sophie, Ethan, Lily, and Owen; and her sister, Margaret Porter of Burlington, Vermont.

Family Acknowledgements

The Harmon family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff of Riverside Hospice Care for their compassionate support during Eleanor's final weeks. Your tenderness and professionalism brought our family immeasurable comfort.

We are grateful to Rev. Hayes and the entire congregation of First Presbyterian Church, whose prayers and fellowship sustained Eleanor for more than four decades. Your presence today means more than words can express.

To the many friends, neighbors, and former students who shared their remembrances, sent letters, brought meals, and sat with us — thank you. Eleanor always said that the measure of a life is found in the kindness given away. She gave much, and she received it back a hundredfold in these days.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eleanor's memory to the **Westfield Public Library Children's Fund** or the **American Heart Association**. Envelopes are available at the door.

A Reading

Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep

by Mary Elizabeth Frye

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
