A Message from
_Dr. Sarah Okafor_

When I think about what Brightpath achieved in 2024, I don't think first about the numbers — though they are extraordinary. I think about a young woman named Destiny, who walked into our College Prep Program as a junior who had never visited a college campus, and walked out as a high school senior with a full scholarship to UC Berkeley. I think about the 312 seniors like Destiny whose trajectories changed this year because of the support of this community.

The numbers, of course, tell their own story. We served 1,552 students across our three programs. Our After-School Tutoring program reached 1,240 students across 23 partner schools, with 94% showing measurable grade improvement by year-end. Our Teacher Training Institute trained 84 educators in 12 school districts, reaching an estimated 2,800 additional students through those teachers' classrooms. And our College Prep Program achieved an 89% four-year college acceptance rate for participating seniors — more than 20 percentage points above the national average.

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. In 2024, we lit a lot of fires."

None of this happens without you. To our Luminary and Champion donors who made multi-year commitments this year: you are the foundation beneath the foundation. To our grant partners who trusted us with six-figure investments: we will continue to earn that trust every day. And to our individual donors who gave what they could — every dollar went to work, and 82 cents of it went directly to students.

As we look to 2025, we are expanding our After-School program into three additional school districts, launching a new Family Financial Literacy component to our College Prep curriculum, and growing our Teacher Training cohort from 84 to 140 educators. The need has never been greater. Neither has our capacity to meet it.

Thank you for being part of this work. Thank you for believing in these students before the world does.

After-School Tutoring Program

Grades 4–12

Our flagship program pairs academically struggling students with trained near-peer and professional tutors for two sessions per week throughout the school year. In 2024, we operated in 23 partner schools across Oakland, Richmond, and East San Jose, serving 1,240 students — our largest cohort ever. Tutors are trained in culturally responsive teaching methods and meet students where they are, building both skill and confidence.

College Prep Program

High School Juniors & Seniors

Our most intensive program guides first-generation college applicants through the full college application journey: from campus visit trips and SAT/ACT preparation to personal essay coaching, financial aid navigation, and scholarship application support. Students who complete the full program have historically outperformed national averages by a substantial margin, and 2024 was no exception. The $1.8 million in scholarships our students secured represents life-changing economic mobility.

Teacher Training Institute

Professional Development

The belief that underserved students are only as supported as their teachers underpins the Teacher Training Institute. In 2024, we ran two full cohorts of our 8-week intensive training program, reaching 84 educators in 12 school districts. Curriculum covers trauma-informed teaching, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and evidence-based literacy intervention strategies. The ripple effect — 2,800 students reached indirectly through trained teachers — makes this our highest-leverage program per dollar invested.
