1 The big idea

#### Water goes round _and round_

Earth never gets new water. The rain on your window today has fallen many times before. It is always moving between the sky, the land and the sea. We call this journey the **water cycle**, and the **sun** gives it the energy to keep going.

1

###### Evaporation

The sun warms water in seas, lakes and puddles. Some of it changes into an invisible gas called **water vapour** and rises into the air.

2

###### Condensation

High in the sky the air is cold. The vapour cools and turns back into tiny drops of water. Billions of drops together make a **cloud**.

3

###### Precipitation

Tiny drops bump together and grow. When they get too heavy to float, they fall as **rain, snow, sleet or hail**.

4

###### Collection

Water gathers in rivers, lakes and seas, or soaks into the ground. Then the sun warms it, and the cycle **starts again**.

Did you know? Your glass of water is billions of years old! Some of it may once have been a **dinosaur’s drink** or a **snowflake**.

#### Match the word to _its meaning_

Draw a line from each word’s dot to the dot of its meaning. A ruler helps!

1 Evaporation

Awater that falls from clouds as rain, snow, sleet or hail

2 Condensation

Bwater in the form of an invisible gas in the air

3 Precipitation

Cwhen liquid water is warmed and changes into a gas

4 Collection

Drainwater that flows over the land into streams and rivers

5 Water vapour

Ewhen water gathers in oceans, lakes, rivers and under the ground

6 Runoff

Fwhen water vapour cools and turns into tiny drops of liquid water

##### Use it in a sentence

Pick **one** word from above. Write a sentence about something you have seen at home or at school.

Tip: “pre-ci-pi-ta-tion” has 5 claps. Say it out loud!— Mr. O

#### Make _rain_ in a jar

Can we make a tiny water cycle on our desk? Let’s find out.

warm water + a cold lid

**Safety first**An adult pours the hot water. Use hot tap water, never boiling water.

##### You will need

* a clear glass jar
* hot tap water
* a small plate
* 6–8 ice cubes
* a timer
* a pencil

##### What to do

1. Ask an adult to fill the jar about one-third full with hot water.
2. Put the plate on top of the jar, like a lid.
3. Put the ice cubes on the plate.
4. Start the timer. Watch the sides of the jar and the bottom of the plate for 5 minutes.
5. Lift the plate carefully. Look at the underside. What do you see?

##### Before I predict…

nothing happens drops form it gets cloudy

I think this will happen because…

Draw your guess

##### After I observed…

After 5 minutes, I saw…

Draw what you saw

There is a puddle on the playground in the morning. By lunchtime it is gone. Where did the water go? Use the word “evaporation”.

###### Rain in a jar · page 4

The hot water **evaporates** and the warm vapour rises. It meets the cold plate and **condenses** into drops on the underside. The drops join, grow heavy and fall back, like **precipitation**. Some children may also see a light mist inside the jar.

###### Check your understanding · page 6

1. **b** condensation
2. **c** steam (it rises from hot water; it does not fall from clouds)
3. Evaporation **1**, Condensation **2**, Precipitation **3**, Collection **4**
4. **T**, **F** (clouds are tiny liquid drops or ice), **F**, **T**
5. The sun warmed the puddle and the water **evaporated** into the air as water vapour.
6. The **cold air high in the sky**, where vapour condenses into cloud drops.

**Timing**Big idea + diagram 10 min. Words 10 min. Jar 15 min. Worksheet + check 15 min.

**Jar tip**A glass jar works best. More ice = faster drops. Put a dark card behind the jar so drops are easy to see.

**Talk about it**“Where could today’s rain be next week?” Let them trace one drop around the diagram.

###### Common mix-ups to listen for

1. **“Clouds are steam.”** Clouds are tiny drops of liquid water or ice. Water vapour itself is invisible.
2. **“The sun boils the sea.”** Evaporation happens at any temperature. A puddle dries without boiling.
3. **“Rain is new water.”** It is the same water, used again and again.

###### Take it further

1. **Puddle watch:** draw chalk around a puddle each hour. How fast does it shrink in sun and in shade?
2. **Cold can:** take a can from the fridge and watch drops form on it. Which stage is this?
3. **Drop diary:** write a story as one raindrop going round the cycle.

## Frequently asked questions

### What should a science workbook include?

Include a hands-on experiment with simple materials, the vocabulary the unit covers, fill-in-the-blank or matching review, a check-your-understanding section, and an answer key for the teacher. This template has each section, pre-filled for a water-cycle unit.

### How do I write a science worksheet for young students?

Use one idea per page, short sentences, and a diagram. Pair a hands-on experiment with the terms it teaches, and add a predict-and-observe step so students test their own guess before they read the answer.

### What grade level is this science workbook for?

The pre-filled example covers Grade 4. Describe any grade and topic to the AI, and it rewrites the reading level and the experiment to match.

### Is this science workbook template free?

Yes. You can customize the science workbook template for free and download it as a print-ready PDF, with a matching answer key for the teacher.
