BuildPDFs started with one promise: content in, professional PDF out. In 2026 the work is about what happens *around* that core — smarter generation, more control after generation, and reusing what you've already made. Here's what shipped, what's in progress, and what's planned.

## Shipped: Agent Skills — smarter generation

The biggest change to the generation engine so far. Agent Skills give the AI specialized, document-type-aware capabilities it applies while building your PDF — so a workbook gets real exercise structure, a whitepaper gets a proper executive summary and section flow, and a lead magnet gets the skimmable, conversion-oriented layout the format demands.

You don't configure anything; you just describe what you want, and the right skills kick in. If you generated a document earlier and weren't happy with the structure, it's worth re-running it now. ## In progress: Custom templates

Today's template gallery is a set of professionally designed starting points. The next step is **yours**: a "Save as Template" flow that turns any document you've generated into a private, reusable template — name it, describe it, and it appears alongside the built-ins.

This is the feature for anyone producing PDFs repeatedly: the quarterly client report with new numbers, [a workbook for each cohort](/guides/workbook-for-each-cohort), a branded lead magnet series. ## Planned: Visual editing mode

Chat is a great way to *generate* a document and a clumsy way to nudge one — "make the heading on page 3 a bit smaller" shouldn't be a sentence. Visual editing mode is direct manipulation on top of the generated PDF: click the thing, change the thing, keep the layout system's consistency underneath.

You get the best of both: the layout system keeps every page consistent and designer-grade, and visual editing gives you direct control over the details — the tweaks you can see faster than you can describe.

## Planned: EPUB import and export

Two directions, both aimed at book workflows:

- **Import** — bring an existing EPUB in and re-generate it as a designed PDF (or refresh its structure).
- **Export** — take the eBook you built in BuildPDFs and ship it as an EPUB for Kindle, Apple Books, and Kobo alongside the PDF.

## In progress: A faster template experience

Less glamorous, very felt: the template gallery is moving to pre-rendered previews, so browsing templates is instant instead of waiting on live renders. Small change, but it's the front door of the product — and it clears the path for the custom-template gallery above to hold many more designs.

## The through-line

Every item on this list attacks the same thing from a different side: the distance between *what you meant* and *what you got*. Skills close it at generation time, visual editing closes it after, templates close it on the next document, and EPUB closes it across formats.
