Tools & Workflow
Best AI PDF Generators in 2026 (Compared)
Nine AI tools that make PDFs, compared on the same seven criteria: writing, page design, long-form layout, table of contents, print-ready export, price and free plan. Each tool gets the job it does best.
Disclosure: We make BuildPDFs. We included it, and we say which tool is best for which job.
The short answer: for a designed multi-page PDF (an ebook, lead magnet, workbook, report or proposal), BuildPDFs is the best fit on our criteria, because it writes the content, designs every page and adds the table of contents and page numbers for you. Gamma is the best choice for presentations and links you share on screen. Canva is the best choice for single-page visuals that you design by hand. Claude and ChatGPT are the best choice for drafting text. For book formatting on a Mac, Vellum is the standard.
We compared the tools on documented features and pricing, checked October 2026. We did not run a hands-on test of each tool for this page. Prices change, so check each tool's pricing page before you buy.
What we compared
We looked at seven things that decide whether you get a finished PDF or a draft that you still have to lay out:
- Writes content. Can the tool write the text from a short description?
- Designs pages. Does the tool lay out the pages (typography, cover, section pages), or do you do it by hand?
- Long-form layout. Does a 20- or 50-page document stay consistent from the first page to the last?
- Table of contents and page numbers. Are they automatic, and do they stay correct when pages move?
- Print-ready export. Can you download a PDF that prints well at a standard page size?
- Price. What does the plan that exports a PDF cost?
- Free plan. Can you try it without paying?
The rank below follows these criteria for one job: a designed, multi-page PDF. If your job is different, read the "Best for" line of each tool. Each tool on this list is the best choice for something.

How to choose
- Decide what you deliver. A link people view on screen points to Gamma. A file people download, print or buy points to a PDF-first tool.
- Count the pages. For one page, a design tool like Canva is fast. For 10 pages or more, an automatic table of contents, page numbers and page breaks save the most time.
- Decide who writes. If you already have the text, any layout tool works; paste it in. If you start from an idea, pick a tool that writes and designs.
- Check the export plan. Some tools put PDF export or badge removal on a paid plan. The table above shows where.
- Try your real document. Most tools on this list have a free plan or trial. Make the same document in two of them and compare the PDFs.
FAQ
What is the best AI PDF generator?
For a designed multi-page PDF such as an ebook, workbook or report, BuildPDFs fits our criteria best: it writes the content, designs every page and adds the table of contents and page numbers. For presentations, Gamma is the stronger choice. For single-page visuals, Canva is.
Can ChatGPT make a PDF?
Yes. ChatGPT can export a Canvas document as a PDF, or write code that makes a PDF. Neither designs the pages. To get a designed PDF, paste the ChatGPT text into a tool that does the layout. See can AI create PDFs.
Is there a free AI PDF generator?
BuildPDFs, Gamma, Inkfluence AI, Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini all have free plans. Read what the free plan exports: Gamma adds a badge to free exports, and Inkfluence AI adds a watermark.
Which AI tool is best for long documents?
