How to save a ChatGPT answer as a PDF

  1. 1

    Copy the answer from ChatGPT

Under the answer, click the Copy button (the icon with two squares). ChatGPT copies the answer as Markdown, with its headings, lists and tables.

  2. 2

    Paste it here

Paste into the box. The preview shows the answer as designed pages. Add a # title line at the top if you want a cover.

  3. 3

    Choose a design

Pick Clean, Editorial, Report or Workbook, and Letter or A4 paper.

  4. 4

    Download the PDF

Click Download PDF and choose Save as PDF in the print dialog.

Why not print the chat page?

When you print a ChatGPT page from the browser, you get the sidebar, the message box, small gray text and page breaks in the middle of tables. Long answers often get cut off.

This converter uses only the answer text. It lays it out as a real document: headings in a clear hierarchy, tables with a header row, code blocks that wrap, and page breaks that do not split a heading from its paragraph.

How to save a whole ChatGPT conversation

ChatGPT has no button that copies a full conversation. Copy each answer you want with its Copy button and paste them into the box one after another. Put a ## heading above each one, such as ## Question 1, so the table of contents lists them.

To keep your questions too, type them as plain lines or as block quotes. A line that starts with > shows as a quote with an accent bar, which makes the questions easy to tell apart from the answers.

For a backup of all your chats, use Settings, then Data controls, then Export data in ChatGPT. You get an email with a file of all conversations. Open chat.html in that file to copy older answers.

What comes through from ChatGPT

Headings, bold text, numbered and bullet lists, tables, links, block quotes and code blocks all come through as you see them in the chat. Math formulas show as their LaTeX source text.

If an answer is in a canvas, open the canvas, select its text and copy it. Then paste it here in the same way.

Frequently asked questions

Is this converter free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no page limit. The only limit is 200,000 characters per document, which is about 60 pages.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The PDF is made in your browser. Your text is not sent to our server and is not saved.

Can ChatGPT make a PDF itself?

ChatGPT can write code that makes a simple PDF file, but the result is plain text on a page, with no design. This converter gives the answer a cover, a table of contents, page numbers and a clean layout in a few seconds.

Why does my pasted answer show ** and # marks?

Those are Markdown marks. Here they are turned into bold text and headings in the preview. If you see them in the preview, check that the marks are at the start of a line for headings, and that each ** has a closing pair.

Can I make a full eBook or report from ChatGPT content?

This converter lays out text you already have. To get a full eBook or report written and designed for you, with custom layouts, charts and images, try BuildPDFs. Describe the document and the AI writes and designs every page.

The PDF has a date or a web address at the top of each page. How do I remove it?

In the print dialog, open More settings and turn off Headers and footers. The page numbers and section titles of the design stay.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Tap Download PDF and the document opens in a new tab with the print screen. On Android, choose Save as PDF. On iPhone, tap the Share button on the print screen, then Save to Files.
